Make a 2009 donation to Hoboken Boathouse!

Dear Friend:

We’re writing to ask you to support the first and only free community boating program on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River.

Over the past 5 years, you may have enjoyed or read about the numerous public programs and activities sponsored by the Hoboken Boathouse. In that time period, our volunteer-run, non-profit organization has helped more than 3,000 people safely paddle different parts of the scenic Hudson River. Our organization is currently comprised of experienced kayakers and enthusiastic volunteers, including members of the Downtown Boathouse in New York City, which has generously supported the development and growth of our fledgling organization and programs.

Our primary community program is the successful Free Kayaking Day, which provides a chance for novices – children, teens and adults – to paddle the cove at Maxwell Place Park. In August 2008, we were excited to open the Maxwell Place Boathouse as a truly public boathouse and a base for our growing programs. During this summer, we offered four free programs at our new location. In order to organize and host more free programs, training events and local excursions, we need your help as a Boathouse supporter and by making a tax deductible donation for some of the many items essential to the new Hoboken Boathouse.  Here’s how:

Life Jackets: $25 helps provide essential safety equipment for all participants
Paddles: $50 to $99 helps purchase new paddles used during Free Kayaking Day programs
Boathouse Expenses: $100 to $149 helps pays for Hoboken Boathouse’s monthly expenses
Marine Radio: $150 to $299 can buy a new Marine Radio to help ensure safety on the Hudson River
Free Kayaking Day: $300 to $499 funds a Free Kayaking Day in your name or organization’s name
Single Kayak: $500 to $749 for a one-person sea kayak dedicated in your name or organization’s name*
Tandem Kayak: $750 and up for a two-person kayak dedicated in your name or organization’s name*

*Though we should tell you, as a public program we cannot reserve these kayaks for any one person’s use

I know you are getting lots of requests like this in your mailbox, but I also hope you appreciate what a difference we are making in Hoboken, in Hudson County, and in the State of New Jersey by creating these opportunities for more and more people to connect to the river. Please join us as a supporter now so that we can provide a safe, fun, and active recreation opportunity on the Hudson River in Hoboken. You can make secure donations through PayPal, or you can use the mailing address below for donations.  We sincerely appreciate any help you can offer at this time!

Safe paddling,

David Downs
President

9/7 Kayaking CANCELLED

Good morning Hoboken Boathouse supporters:

Although the skies may be sunny after a long day of rain yesterday (3.39 inches in NYC Central Park!), we unfortunately cannot run today's scheduled program due to the questionable water quality in the Hudson River.

During large storms, the amount of rainfall overwhelms local sewer and storm water drainage systems, and creates a problem referred to as "Combined Sewer Overflow" (CSO). This is a major problem throughout the NY Metropolitan region, and you can read more here in a report by the Riverkeeper organization that explains CSO:

http://www.riverkeeper.org/campaign.php/pollution/the_facts/986-nyc-combined-sewer-overflows

Thanks for your understanding with this short amount of notice. As always, we will send out updates for any upcoming programs.

Due to the forecasted rainfall and potential damage from Tropical Storm Hanna tomorrow in the New York metropolitan area, the Free Kayaking Day scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 7th is now tentative.

HCCB will make a decision on Sunday morning based on the conditions in the Maxwell Place cove, and post an update on Sunday morning by 9AM on our website, or you can also call 610-780-2395 for a status message.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email.

Thanks for your continuing support of the Hoboken Boathouse.
